Last week, a Bloomberg story revealed that an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) official boasted to an executive at the agri-giant Monsanto Company about “killing” another investigation into safety concerns over Roundup, a controversial weed-killer.
If collusion did in fact take place, Monsanto and the EPA need to be held accountable. FIC and its coalition colleagues will be visiting members of Congress in Washington, D.C. to demand an investigation into the issue and spread awareness.
Monsanto is involved in over 50 lawsuits that allege the company’s Roundup exposure caused them to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer. What’s worse is that these lawsuits suggest Monsanto not only knew about the risks, but deliberately tried to cover them up!
Obviously, there is cause for concern here. So where is the EPA in all of this? Why aren’t our agency watchdogs barking? Turns out the agency, in this case EPA, might have been working on the industry’s behalf. Recently unveiled court records show that an EPA official actually let Monsanto ghostwrite its own toxicology reports! This is unacceptable.
We need accountability at every level. Hundreds of thousands of people have been exposed to this carcinogen. FIC is committed to the integrity of food, which means food should be produced and procured in a manner that is consistent with commonly held values and beliefs.
